What's your business, and who are your customers?

Are you a brand, entrepreneur, expert, or agency owner? Have you got a story to tell and a message to share? Are you frustrated at being the best-kept secret in your industry? Do you want people to know who you are and what you do? Are you fed up with seeing your competitors on the pages of magazines and on the social feeds of influencers? I am asking, do you want to be seen in the press to accelerate your authority, boost your business, and cultivate your confidence? If you do, welcome to PR School. Over the past 25 years, I have worked for some of the biggest global brands, most dynamic UK businesses, and some exceptional entrepreneurs, and today I teach people like you to do it for themselves. And I love it! From Tom and Jerry launches to James Cameron premieres in Amsterdam, touring Europe with a team of animators, and hanging out at media parts across the world with some amazing contacts, I've been there, done that, and now I get to help others claim the awards and secure the coverage that helps them to grow their business and confidence.

PR School – Your Time to Shine is my second book, and this masterclass in self-promotion is at the heart of the services I offer today. From my membership and courses to one-to-one clarity sessions, VIP days, and full agency training, if you want to be seen and heard in all the right places, PR School is the place to be.

Tell us about yourself

As well as being the founder of PR School, I'm an author, award-winning career coach, PR mentor and trainer for small business owners, speaker, and guest lecturer. This isn't the route I thought my career would take. I have boardroom ambitions, but when my son was born with hip dysplasia, not only did I take on the role of 'hospital mum,' but I also set up DDH UK, a global support network, and wrote my first book Cast Life. I hit rock bottom dealing with this diagnosis which was not life limited, but it was life-changing and challenging, and navigating it alone was hard and lonely. I didn't want others to feel that way today. They don't have to because we have a thriving support network that is kind, caring, and inclusive.

In a similar vein, I don't want business owners to feel alone in their quest to be in the spotlight; therefore, I bring them together, cheer them on and give them the tools and community they need to step out of their comfort zone and onto the media stage. Not shy of being in the limelight, I'm often seen in the national press and on TV, and I'm a regular contributor to Pick Me Up, Health & Wellbeing, Metro, Natural Health, and Female First, so when it comes to doing my own PR, I walk the walk and talk the talk. At the heart of all I do is empowering others to find their voice, tell their story and be unapologetically visible not only in their lives but in the media! Living by the sea in Devon with my husband and two sons means that when I'm not working, I am on the beach with the dogs, in the waves in a wetsuit, or snuggled under a blanket, reading magazines and drinking coffee.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, it's got to be having the ability to be there for my sons at their sports and school events, as well as being home when they are sick (that's today, as I write this) and doing it all, living by the sea. Yes, my career took a turn 14 years ago that I hadn't seen coming, but that made me resilient and looked at other ways to channel my ambition and creativity, and from that, I created something special with DDH UK as well as PR School. Those waves kept coming when the pandemic hit, but after taking a step back and looking at how I could pivot like the rest of the world, I did it, and so I think it's that ability to adapt that helps me be the business owner and champion of others I am today.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding that work-life harmony! I don't think it's a case of balance because your business is your baby, and when you love what you do as I do, you want it to thrive. However, having encountered burnout more than once, I need to ensure I step away from my desk, walk my dogs, go to the beach with my family and just stop from time to time. I am not good at that, I have a lot of ideas and want to do more, but your health is vital, so needs must be. Meditation and swimming keep me grounded, and of course, living by the sea is so good for my soul, and I love it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take your time and get things in place. I am a massive fan of Amy Porterfield, and her new book, Two Weeks Notice, is a masterclass in preparation, and I totally recommend it to anyone.
  2. Know your Why - why are you doing this for yourself and not taking a cheque? For me, I want the freedom to be here for my kids, and that became even clearer when we were in and out of the hospital with my son, but I could work and write on my terms. If I have a tough day or a tricky client, I think, would I rather have a boss or be a boss.....you know what I would say.
  3. Finally, celebrate ALL your successes-big, small, and hardly there at all. It takes time, dedication, self-belief, and a truckload of confidence to be a business owner, and I ask you to cheer yourself along every step of the way. It's not just a grand opening that needs a cheer but sending that email to a company you really want to work with, securing an interview in a magazine, or setting up your Facebook page. So many people don't follow their dreams, so I encourage you to celebrate yours every single stop of the entrepreneurial way.
