Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alana Cobb, owner of Princess Confections Bakery, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Princess Confections bakery is a cake studio that specializes in custom cakes for weddings, birthdays, and other special events. Most of my clients are brides in search of the perfect wedding cake for their big day. However, I still create other special occasion cakes when time permits.

Tell us about yourself

Well, where to start, lol. My name is Alana Cobb, and I have been baking for close to 15 years now. After college, I worked in food service in various managerial positions. While I had a job in my field (Restaurant Management), I didn’t feel like I ever had the chance to be creative. So, I decided I wanted to learn how to make wedding cakes, lol. It all grew from there… I initially baked out of my home while working full time and being a mom to my daughter Addison. 😍 Then, by the grace of God, I eventually opened a storefront! I have been in my brick or mortar for seven years now. My largest motivator is my 13-year-old daughter Addison. She’s my biggest cheerleader and has been here for practically this whole journey. I just want to set the best example for her as much as possible.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe my biggest accomplishment to this date is maintaining and growing my business/storefront for seven years. After moving locations to the struggles of the pandemic…Princess Confections Bakery is still here and growing! ☺️

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing with being a business owner is work/home/personal life balance. As a business owner, you feel as if you’re never “off” the clock. However, you HAVE to carve out time to take care of yourself and be with the ones that love and support you the most.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research and define your niche first before you start your business. This will save you time and money in the long run.
  2. Be consistent… I learned that if your product is consistent, you build client trust, and in turn, you gain lifelong customers and tons of referrals. I have a small marketing plan, but most of my business growth came from word-of-mouth referrals.
  3. Lastly..be patient. Owning your own business takes time and tons of hard work. Your business will grow if you are consistent, genuine, and professional.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Over the years, I have relied on my faith in God and the support of family. I wouldn’t have made it this far without either of them. I am and will forever be grateful for their love and undying support.
