Be Financially Fearless - Purse Strings

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Barbara Provost, Founder of Purse Strings, LLC., located in Libertyville, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Purse Strings offers straightforward financial tools and resources and an available-for-hire network of vetted professionals who specialize in serving women.

Tell us about yourself

As a consultant in the financial industry, I could see by the linear sales process, marketing materials of straight white families, and their need to push their products - that women were an overlooked market. Women tell me that their financial professional "doesn't even look at them." Yes, women influence over 95% of the purchasing decisions in the household. We are a 23-trillion dollar overlooked market and set to come into the largest transference of wealth in history. I am motivated to provide women with free tools and resources to help educate them to make smart financial decisions for themselves and their families and a vetted directory of financial professionals who specialize in serving women.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I did research, held focus groups, and continued to find a solution to help women live a life that is "financially fearless." From that gap, I created a thriving business that is helping women step into their power - which is their money!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having a passion and having a mission that will help vast amounts of women is so important - but it will fall on deaf ears if you don't have the money needed for marketing. So many have told me that my work is so important - but I am shouting from my front door! Getting the financial support to market and sell this important work is very hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small with a prototype.
  2. Run your ideas by a lot of people and be open to feedback.
  3. Pivot and try again.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Need to also add that you need to research out and find a great coach. There are a lot of coaches, so do your research. Also, ensure your business financials are separate from your personal finances and keep them all up-to-date.
