Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicholas Blewett, Founder of Qi Fit Qigong Training, located in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My vision for Qi Fit is to help make the practice of Qigong as popular and widely accessible as Yoga and to develop high-quality Qigong Instructors to help me fulfill that vision. Therefore, my clients tend to be people who understand that Qigong is as deep practically and philosophically as Yoga and other holistic exercise systems and natural medicines and who want to explore Qigong further and discover those depths for their own wellness and longevity. Additionally, it is to work with committed clients who want to share the gifts of Qigong in their existing holistic exercise classes and professional business events.

Tell us about yourself

I have been involved in Internal Martial Arts, Old Style Yang Taijiquan, and Qigong for 27 years, and I have always been passionate about sharing the wisdom of internal movement principles and Chinese medicine, and Taoist philosophies. My passion for these arts led me to become a Doctor of Chinese medicine, and I have been working as a clinical acupuncturist for the last 22 years. During this time, I had been waiting for the time when Qigong would begin entering our mainstream wellness and exercises consciousness. Then 5 years ago, I noticed the trends starting to shift, and I had quite a number of people asking me to design programs to share my wisdom and help them become Qigong instructors.

My motivations and inspirations for sharing this ancient and primal wisdom had always been present. Each day I am motivated by the knowledge that life has chosen me to be someone to assist and lead the Qigong industry into our mainstream consciousness. Armed with this knowledge, I wake up each day motivated to work, doing exactly that to the best of my abilities. I have the faith and conviction that the spirit of Qigong and the willingness of life to see this art and the gifts it offers others manifested throughout humanity is working through me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Other than helping people find their inner peace through Qigong and meditation, I’d have to say I find internal personal growth the most important aspect of any business development. However, it is this last point that I would say is my most successful accomplishment. It is finding, focusing, fortifying, and acknowledging the personal strength and discipline to follow my dreams unceasingly and to stand up for and maintain the faith to keep believing and following my passion despite life’s challenges. I’m constantly balancing this by understanding that while this skill doesn’t guarantee my success in any future endeavours, it does help to boost the innate probability that, given the complete collapse of any business undertaking, I have the internalized character traits to adapt and to persevere regardless of any challenges.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I believe the hardest thing that comes along with being a business owner is learning how and what to say “no” to. The no’s can include going out with friends or saying no to opportunities that, on the surface, look great but detract from the outcomes you’re genuinely striving for, or it can be saying no to your own impulses and habits, behaviour, and desires. Either way, it’s what we say no to that defines our yeses.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what you want and why! Become clear of your life’s vision and purpose. Know who you are, what you want, and why you want it, and then become extremely clear on exactly what the outcome of your actions looks, feels, tastes, smells, and sounds like, and then surrender into that path and pay the debt.
  2. Find a map! Create and execute a logical and proven strategy – if you can’t do this for yourself, find someone and pay them to help you learn what to do and how to execute the plan while remaining accountable to each step of the process.
  3. Reflect and Refine. Journal and reflect on your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly performance and performance markers to guide your personal action and use this to remain accountable to your vision and purpose.
