Soulful Visions through the Lens - Rachael Jane

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachael Jane, Owner of Rachael Jane Photography | JaneVision, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I love working with people. My customers are generally magazines, high school seniors, artists, musicians, writers, or corporations needing headshots. People with a strong appreciation for fashion, art, and leadership or who have a strong intellectual or musical talent are my ideal client.

Tell us about yourself

I am generally a relaxed person with a positive outlook on life. I enjoy learning about people and their stories and how they have come into who they are as a person. I have a deep appreciation for differences and similarities in people, and I try to make those things shine when I'm doing a photoshoot. My motivation comes from the desire to create and learn new things every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been to work separately from my home in a studio that provides space for creativity and focus.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is the unpredictability of how busy I will be. Some months I have a lot going on; some months, hardly anything. Also, being a sole proprietor, I often work on my own and only see a person once. It's like living in a tourist city, very transient. Sometimes I need to do other things as well to have some regular consistency and relationships with people.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn all you can about social media marketing/SEO.
  2. Go to industry events or join industry groups like ASMP or PPA and meet other like-minded people; this can help you generate leads and give away leads when you cannot meet a client's needs. You can also work collaboratively with others and grow your creativity. You can learn about others' pitfalls, which saves you time and money. You can have some regular social interaction. Some industry groups do group healthcare. It's a way of giving back to share and mentor with others as well.
  3. Secure a second income for a while to support the process. This can be important for those unpredictable times.
