Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Anderson, CEO of Tight Ship Operations, located in Laveen Village, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide full-service project management for the construction industry. We specialize in Solar. We allow solar contractors to sell and install solar and not worry about customer communication, designs, utility, permits, etc. We do all the back-in orders and provide an excellent customer experience on behalf of the contractors. Our homeowners give a 98% rating with 80% referral rates. Contractors no longer have to hire, train, or retain employees.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the solar operations field for 15 years. I have started two full operations from the ground up and helped three others grow operations to become some of the largest in the company. I am install trained and know every aspect of solar from the point of sale to system turn on.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Paving the way for a woman in the construction industry. I have been awarded one of the most influential women in solar and have spoken with many women at solar conferences to help other women in the solar industry.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The natural ebbs of flows in the solar industry. We call it the "solar coaster." We pride ourselves on the best customer service, so this helps with customer retention, but it is still an interesting ride.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be true to yourself and your morals no matter what. Don't be so desperate to start that you allow your beliefs to go to the side so you can make money and grow. If you don't have morals and do things ethically, you will never be happy, even if you are rich.
  2. Know your market. Do not try to start something in a field that you have no knowledge of. Building relationships in the field will help as you start your own company.
  3. Try to limit the amount of debt you go into. Don't try to do everything at once. I started in my home and slowly grew so that I did not take on too much debt.
