Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Annie Singer, founder of Recip.ly, located in Kenosha, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Recip.ly is a premium recipe platform that eliminates the most common frustrations around online recipes: ads, slow-to-load pages, popups, and more! Think of us like the "Netflix" of online recipes. The idea of spending 10 minutes on the TV guide channel only to spend half your time watching commercials sounds so obsolete — so why are we still Googling for recipes and dealing with ads?

Tell us about yourself

I had been commuting for 3 hours a day before covid, and when lockdowns happened, I had a lot more free time to do the things I like — like cooking! I was always so frustrated with the recipe experience and couldn't find a suitable solution, so I decided to build one myself.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Within six months, I brought an MVP product to market and raised my first $25,000.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner often feels lonely and isolating. Like no one else has the same problems that you have. It's important to build a network of peers in a similar stage of business as you so that you can commiserate and share experiences.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure the things you are measuring are truly the most impactful metrics for you at that particular time – this evolves over time! It's easy to get caught up in vanity metrics or to blindly drive revenue at any cost when there are other more important things you could be focusing on.
  2. Be patient. Everything will be MUCH slower than you planned for or anticipated.
  3. Have a strong network of peers and mentors to help you work through things and answer questions for you.
