Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marci Redmond, Founder of Redmond Consulting LLC, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My initial business is Life Insurance consulting; however, I have branched out into marketing and Mobile home investing to generate various streams of income. The marketing aspect is for insurance, as it seems many agents struggle to obtain solid leads to sell insurance, and that is the lifeblood of the business.

Tell us about yourself

I started in this business because I was looking to get out of corporate America and take control of my time; it wasn't until a few years later that I actually created a business. Before then, I was just an independent contractor. I am motivated by the need people have for help understanding insurance and the need for agents to conserve the money they make and create their own leads. Buying leads can be very expensive, and when you're a new agent, that isn't in your budget most of the time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment is still having a business. My business has been around going on 4 years, and that's a great achievement considering most businesses fail in the first 2 years, and we just got out of a global pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Obtaining financing to get your business going and keeping it afloat. The loan process for businesses is set up for the bigger businesses, not the smaller ones, so a lot of my capital has come from my own pocket.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid plan in place.
  2. Know your customer base and build your client list before starting your business.
  3. Expect the unexpected and plan for that, too; make sure to have a nest egg for your business, but it gets expensive.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Yes, if you're an Entrepreneur, it is imperative to create more than one stream of income. Anything is liable to happen, as we've seen with the pandemic, and having just one source of income can put you in the poor house if it crashes.
