Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany DeVall Heyden, Founder of Renovaré Functional Medicine, located in Bassett, NB, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Renovaré Functional Medicine is a wellness clinic addressing the root cause and underlying imbalances within the body to promote health and well-being by minimizing and relieving symptoms. We focus on gut health, hormone balance, thyroid optimization, medically managed weight loss, and health optimization.

Tell us about yourself

I became a nurse practitioner specializing in functional medicine after my own health struggles. I learned about the value of searching for the cause of symptoms, studied holistic nutrition and health and wellness, and knew I needed to return to school so I could help more people find answers to their health problems. I love learning, but I especially love functional medicine and how the body works together, and how physical symptoms can be a web of underlying imbalances that need to be addressed. I know I can make a difference in their lives, and it provides me with so much joy when I see them improve during our time together.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting a business is hard work but so rewarding as you watch it bloom. I find joy in the referrals because I know I made a difference in someone's health and well-being!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is all of the responsibilities you have. As a small business, I am in charge of everything, and marketing has been my biggest struggle. I have never liked being visible on social media, but that is the best way to advertise. I really had to come out of my shell and get comfortable being visible to the public, and the more you practice, the easier it gets.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The first tip I would give anyone wanting to start a business is to find a mentor. It is very challenging to know all of the steps necessary when you are just starting out. Investing in a mentor or coach can save you lots of time and frustration.

The second tip is to stay focused! There are lots of highs and lows, and it is important to stay on task and always remember your why!

The third tip is to set a realistic timeframe and goals. This was particularly challenging for me because I wanted everything done today. Keep in mind your endgame, but be realistic day-to-day establish a list of what you want to accomplish for the day, stick to it, and be proud of how much you have growth you have made!
