Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Short, owner of Rise Chiropractic & Nutrition, located in Dublin, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Chiropractic & Nutrition Clinic in Dublin, Ohio, that helps people live a lifestyle they love through chiropractic care, nutrition coaching, and recovery care. We provide individualized services to help you, your child, or your entire family feel and function your best. We work on everything from pain and symptom management to improving energy, improving sleep, and overall wellness. We have additional training in taking care of pregnant and postpartum women as well as kids. We love having an office that can take care of the whole family and have a passion for building a healthier community here in Columbus.

Tell us about yourself

I have always known that I wanted to be a doctor, but the type of doctor I wanted to be has changed over time. Chiropractic came into my life at a time when I was arguably the sickest and most unhealthy I've ever been. Through lifestyle changes, chiropractic care, and rehab, I was able to experience significant changes in my life, and I now have a huge passion for sharing that with others. Prior to opening Rise Chiropractic & Nutrition, I practiced in two other offices in other suburbs of Columbus. After a few years in practice, I realized that there was more that I wanted to do to build a healthier community. So I partnered with my husband, Jay, who is a dietitian, and together we have built Rise. Helping more people through chiropractic care, lifestyle and nutrition coaching, and recovery services is my true passion and sharing that with more people is what keeps me motivated every day. I want to help build a community of health & wellness here in Columbus and be a resource for those around me to look up to. As a business owner, I not only get to practice chiropractic and provide immense benefit to the practice members of Rise, but I get to educate and build a healthier community, and the impact that I can have is so powerful and humbling.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our practice has been open for almost a full year, and we have a growing, thriving practice. As a new business, getting people to know who you are is one of the biggest challenges. And we have been so lucky and have worked really hard to get involved in the community and position ourselves as a resource of health and wellness to those around us. We have a practice full of amazing practice members that continues to grow month after month, and even less than a year into practice; we're making plans on how to continue growing so we can work with more people and grow the impact we're having in our community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it has a good work-life balance. When you love what you do, it is easy to find yourself "working" even during your free time. I often find that when I'm off the clock, I'm still thinking about or brainstorming about Rise. But I've come to learn that's ok. Rise is a part of me, and working on the business is something I truly enjoy!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build relationships- building authentic relationships with community members, local business owners, colleagues, and more has been a huge reason that we have been so successful. Everyone knows someone who needs your services, and authentically connecting with those around you with the purpose of just getting to know them has led so many people to our doors. We have never tried to "sell" what we do, only show our heart and why we love what to do. And with being ourselves, representing our brand, and connecting with the purpose of truly getting to know others it has led us to some of the most wonderful relationships that have helped to jumpstart our success in ways I never imagined.
  2. Adapt- we are at a time where things have changed more than ever. Networking meetings are virtual; social media is the place to be, etc. And If you aren't showing up where people are, it is hard to get visible. If you've watched others run a business, been in business before, or are just starting out, you have to be able to adapt in order to keep up with your customers and those you're trying to work with.
  3. Prioritize Reading & Learning- there are always new perspectives to take from reading and learning from those both in and outside your industry. Not everything you read and learn will be great advice, but being able to identify that, try new things in your business, and always stay innovative will help you to continually grow personally and will also help your business thrive.
