Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Darcie Clark, Founder of Riverscape Counseling, located in Dayton, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Riverscape Counseling. We are a private outpatient counseling practice. We work with all of those in the community who need mental health services. We accept most insurance, and self-pay, and we offer a sliding scale. We offer several specialty services such as EMDR, DBT, and Equine Therapy. We are Gender affirming and offer BIPOC and Asian counseling.

Tell us about yourself

I see myself as very much a part of our “herd” known as Riverscape Counseling. I realized early on that although I wanted to be all things to all people, that was not realistic. However, in bringing on a team of diverse individuals, I could come pretty darn close. What motivates me each day is realizing the power a single individual can have and the impact one decision can have on a whole community. I believe this has become ever more clear in our ever-evolving political climate. Realizing what genuine support can mean to an individual helps me to understand that sometimes the role we are in is larger than all of us.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I enjoy challenging myself and building others up. As part of our programming, I take on students from our local Universities and help train them. Seeing them grow and move onward and eventually have the strength, courage, and knowledge to operate their own practice. I really see that more, I suppose, as their accomplishment, but I do work on trying to foster that as part of their training.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I’ve noted that it appears as though the larger we get, the more of a target we seem to become. It’s difficult to navigate those growth spurts what attention may come with it, both positive and negative.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t be afraid just to take a step forward. Even a small step is a step. Others will appear.
  2. Listen to those who have come before you. It’s great to try new things, but you don’t need to reinvent the wheel.
  3. Listen not only to others but listen to yourself. If your gut is telling you something, listen.
