Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachael Brower, Co-Owner of Rock Creek Soaps, located in Billings, MT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Rock Creek Soaps is a handcrafted soap and body products company based out of Billings, MT. Our customers come from all over the US. Many encounter our products at National Park gift shops for the first them, then visit our website as repeat customers.

Tell us about yourself

Rock Creek Soaps was birthed in my kitchen and has grown into a large facility where not only I and my business partner Jen Dillabaugh and I work but also several employees. I wish there was some really inspiring backstory, but honestly, I just wanted to see if we could make it go, and it certainly has! We ship out soap and bath products all across all 50 states. I am motivated by making a difference, in my family's life, in my business partner's family, and the lives of our employees.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say overcoming the challenges of scaling is quite a leap to go from just you and your partner to a team of people, not only trusting them but also learning how to delegate and be effective first as a creative and then as a manager.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner for me is turning "work" off. It is a never-ending cycle of tasks that just keep on giving, and learning how to turn that off and spend time not working or taking an actual vacation is incredibly difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

That's an easy one!

  1. Running a business is like a roller coaster; you're just along for the ride, enjoy it!
  2. Put systems in place early; it never hurts to develop your methodologies and operating procedures. It'll make it easier when you add in employees.
  3. Know your numbers! Get a solid handle on your costs, profits, and sales, know where you spend all your pennies, or you'll watch your dollars disappear and not know where!
