Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rocky Lalvani, Founder of Profit Comes First, located in Harrisburg, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We work with small business owners to have a growing and more profitable business. We start by helping them implement Profit First and then help to improve profitability. We dig into their numbers to see where the cash is flowing. We also set targets and help them achieve their growth goals.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been interested in building wealth and creating spreadsheets to achieve that goal. I started way back in the 80s when the first electronic spreadsheet, VisiCalc, was invented. I was helping accountants go from paper ledgers to electronic spreadsheets. Since then, I have helped others build spreadsheets to manage and grow their business. I was shocked to learn many business owners don't understand the business of business. It became clear when I learned they went into business to do what they love, and being an accountant was not at the top of the list. It's hard for businesses to thrive when they don't measure and understand their financials.

My goal is to help them accomplish this. Small business is the backbone of America and the engine for growth. I want to help them be successful so we can have a growing and thriving economy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When clients work with me for over a year, they usually say, "I have never had this much cash. I don't know what to do with it". To be able to help business owners who have been in business for a year but struggled with cash flow and getting paid, it's great to see them have success!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I struggle with maintaining the marketing and lead generation portion of our business and balancing that with the ability to deliver our services to clients. Keeping that balanced is the key to continued steady growth and cash flow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Separate your personal and business finances and create a system to track the finances.
  2. Come up with a financial plan for your business that includes Profit and Paying yourself first.
  3. On a regular basis (monthly minimum), review the numbers and course correct them every month.
