Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Penny DeJager, founder of Rootology Wellness Therapy, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder of Rootology Wellness Therapy in Calgary, AB. My practice consists of online holistic nutrition and wellness coaching. I specialize in the Metabolic Balance program that offers personalized nutrition plans to clients specific to their biochemistry. My clients are women in mid-life who struggle with health issues such as weight gain, hormone imbalances, fatigue, inflammation/pain, and generally not feeling well. My approach is very individualized, focusing on long-term health benefits, including sustainable weight loss.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the health and wellness field for over 30 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Diploma in Registered Massage Therapy, Diploma in Natural Nutrition, and Certified Metabolic Balance Coach in Canada and the USA.

I have always been passionate about the human body and how everything is interconnected. Over the last three years, my practice has been focused on holistic nutrition coaching as I know I can make the most impact in a person's life using whole food nutrition and natural supplementation. I am motivated to support my clients in healing their health from the inside out, and I am so passionate about reaching the women who need this support right now!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think since the pandemic hit, I am proud of how I pivoted and decided to focus on building my nutrition business online. It meant learning new technology and getting used to how the online world of business works, but it has been very rewarding. I would never have been able to make this big difference in people's lives just by supporting people locally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I love what I do, but that doesn't mean some days aren't tough. I realized early on that lone wolfing doesn't work. Women, in particular, need the support of other women entrepreneurs to lift each other up and learn from each other. I find that learning some of the technology is hard, especially when it doesn't come naturally. I am trying to embrace it, and if it gets too much, ask for the support that I need as my business grows!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself! If you want to build a business, you need to believe that it is possible!
  2. Get visible in any way that you can! Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Just be yourself!
  3. Get support sooner than later for working on your business. You may have lots of education and experience, but do you have the business training to back it up to build a successful business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Thank you for this opportunity to share with others. I strongly feel that staying connected to other entrepreneurs is important and vital to everyone's success!
