Tell us about yourself

In 2014, I lost my mother to breast cancer. Before she transitioned, I got tested for the genetic mutation that causes breast and ovarian cancer. I was prompted to do so because both my maternal grandmother and great-grandmothers transitioned due to complications from breast and ovarian cancer.

I learned I have the BRCA 1 genetic mutation (do your Googles folks) and decided to remove my breasts and ovaries prophylactically. It was then that I realized the fragility of life. I felt called to walk authentically in what I believed was my purpose and unique gifting - art and creativity. I used my CEUs from my then Corporate America job to understand the technical aspects of brand building. I grew my consultancy, and by 2016 I was able to leave my 9-5 and start this agency. Whew! I'm worn out by that story... every time!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been persistence. I know that sounds kind of unimpressive, but grit and persistence are critical business skills. I am grateful that I've chosen to get up every single workday and chose my business. Well, that and designing some collateral for Michelle Obama's "The Light We Carry" book launch! Eeek!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things to embrace about being a business owner is that there is no final destination. It is an infinite journey. There will always be tasks to complete, staff to lead, customers to serve, and growth to consider.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be a perpetual student. You can never know everything, but you can always learn something.
  2. Seek mentorship or join a mastermind. No man is an island. You need feedback, help, support, and a kick in the butt from time to time.
  3. Don't take anything personally. People are too dynamic to decipher. You'll break your brain trying to figure them out. Dole out lots of grace, use your discernment and fail forward.
