Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ruthie Crawford, CEO of Harlow Jewelry, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a jewelry business in Portland, OR, where we give a portion of proceeds from every piece of jewelry to organizations that support women and minorities. I needed to figure out a way to use what I love (jewelry) to help make a difference in the world. My line, Harlow, gives to various organizations such as Forward Together and Dress For Success. My other jewelry line, Ruthie & Olive, donates three meals for every piece sold through the Oregon Food Bank.

Tell us about yourself

I accidentally got my start in jewelry 14 years ago when a friend showed me how to make it. At the time, I had recently been laid off from my job in finance, had a three-month-old baby, and had no idea what to do next! Once I started making jewelry on a whim, I took it into some of my favorite local stores, and they wanted to buy my line! The rest was history after that.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm really proud of having this business support me and my daughter for the last (almost) 14 years. I'm grateful to have worked with my customers to give back to the community. I'd call it my biggest accomplishment, just following my heart and going for it!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a solo business owner can be lonely sometimes. You make all the tough decisions and are responsible for everything. Your to-do list is never completed. It's really helpful to be part of a business owner community to share ideas and struggles. Sometimes when you're in the thick of it, just a small shift in perspective can be a game-changer - and sometimes, you need another person to reflect that shift to you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go with your gut. There are no rules on how things need to be done. Do them your way - it will work out better in the end, I promise.
  2. Let mistakes and setbacks be part of the process. It's just part of the process! And you'll be stronger and hold more wisdom on the other side.
  3. Reach out to the small business owner community. There are lots of people who are or have gone through what you are going through. Getting ideas and support can be vital for your success and energy to keep going!
