Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittny Horne, Founder of RVL Wellness Co, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At RVL (rev·el) Wellness Co, we know what it's like to be booked, busy, and burnt out. So, we're on a mission to help Black women find peace within the pieces of our puzzles. We create self-care-inspired jigsaw puzzles designed to help you feel seen, de-stress, and practice mindfulness. With as little as 30 minutes, you can finish our 48pc starter puzzle, which is perfect for beginner puzzlers and those establishing new self-care routines. Or try our 300-piece puzzles which can be done in about 3 hours, perfect for avid puzzlers and those looking for a mindful getaway at home.

Tell us about yourself

In 2020, my life was flipped upside down, and I needed a way to heal my anxiety and depression. I searched for self-care activities I could do at home, and I stumbled upon an old pastime...Puzzles! I remembered how peaceful I felt as a child when my grandmother and I would sort and match all the pieces. I reminisced on the joy and accomplishment I felt after placing the final piece. Now, as an adult, I craved those same feelings and decided to try puzzling again. I quickly began to look for a puzzle with images that looked like me. However, after a week of searching for a beautiful puzzle that featured a Black woman, I could only find one. I knew that other Black women were stretched thin and in dire need of alternative self-care products like myself. So, I created RVL Wellness puzzles as the solution! I developed a starter kit of puzzles with just 48 pieces making them fun and easy to complete. They are perfect for creating daily moments of mindfulness for women like you who may be booked and busy.

It was so important to me to make sure other women felt seen and inspired by the products that I created. That's why I partner with Black women to design the artwork for my puzzles and feature imagery that uplifts and inspires us. Each piece highlights our cultural values or shows us participating in a self-care activity. Some examples include a young woman indulging in a relaxing bubble bath, friends going on vacation, and images that represent the love we have for ourselves and each other. We do this in the hopes that your life will soon imitate our art. My goal is to help you practice self-care on a daily basis and enjoy peaceful moments in life. Since launching in 2021, I've been able to help hundreds of Black women find peace with our self-care-inspired puzzles. I hope you can be next to discover the joy of RVL Wellness and secure your peace with every piece.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, I think my biggest accomplishment is the fact that I haven't given up on my business yet. As a business owner, you deal with so many ups and downs, and the downs can be debilitating. There are times where I just want to give up, and I have to dig deep in order to keep going. I managed to learn how to give myself grace and honor the moments where I feel like it's all too much. I take breaks, and I allow myself to slow down and refocus. This gives me the strength to keep going.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner and solopreneur, you wear so many hats. You're the owner, you're the social media person, you're customer service, you're the face of the brand, and the list goes on and on. I think the hardest thing is constantly trying to juggle them all. On top of that, I never really know if I'm doing anything right. But I try to learn from everything that I do and take steps forward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your community of other small business owners. Look for people with businesses within your particular industry and those outside of it as well. Those people will turn out to be your biggest cheerleaders and your biggest resource in times of need.
  2. Know that it's ok not to have all of the answers. If you have a passion or an idea, take one step at a time and push it forward. You will be able to figure things out as you go.
  3. Understand that you are running your own race, and therefore, you can go at your own pace. Don't feel pressure to go as fast or as far as anyone else.
