Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Kucera, founder of Sage, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an author, chiropractor, and Ayurvedic practitioner. I aim not only to help others through the application of Ayurveda and chiropractic care, but I also strive to empower my patients and clients. I want to know their story and enable them to learn how to care for themselves in the best ways possible. I've also written two books with the same spirit: The Ayurvedic Self-Care Handbook and The Seven Ways of Ayurveda.

Tell us about yourself

I was motivated to start my own practice because I felt like healthcare could be approached in a different way. At the time, healthcare felt very impersonal, systematized, and formulaic. I wanted not only to see a change but to be a part of it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I'm most proud of my community (clients/patients/students). Over many years, many people have come together in friendship and through shared values and ideals. It's difficult to take credit for incredible people coming together and supporting one another, yet above all, it's the people that I serve that I view as my greatest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the toughest thing about being a business owner is prioritizing my needs over my business (and ultimately, my clients). I care a lot and want to operate and serve others from a place of the heart. Sometimes that means I spread myself too thin and lose myself in my work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what you need to stay healthy and keep it sacred.
  2. Create a solid foundation before you begin—allow it to be flexible, but be sure you can grow from a stable place.
  3. Use your resources. People like to help, so always ask and accept it!
