Healthier & More Abundant Life - Sanctuary Functional Medicine

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eric Potter, Director & Physician of Sanctuary Functional Medicine, located in Franklin, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our team serves those who are suffering from chronic illness which has not been fully explained by conventional medicine. We approach their chronic illness with a root cause analysis so we can solve dysfunction rather than cover it over with band-aids; by applying the best of natural and conventional medicine at the root, adults and children in our clinic return to a healthier, more abundant life.

Tell us about yourself

A dream began during medical school at a clinic where the whole person received care with the intent to restore health and restore joy to live. The big business world of medicine did not offer that opportunity, so I stepped out of the system to create a system that served the patient as a whole person. Serving fellow mankind simultaneously serves God by restoring broken lives to live in greater abundance and joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment is overcoming the terror of taking a one-man show and growing it into a multi-provider team in the 2020s.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Caring for complex patients whom we see every few weeks is challenging, but caring for the colleagues and co-workers within our team presses upon me daily. Shepherding my employees, supporting them, encouraging them, and challenging them to grow while helping them to overcome their weaknesses and frailties is both a great challenge and also a great joy as they blossom into fulfilling their callings.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, count the costs. Without knowing the costs, you can't prepare. Without preparation, you won't likely succeed.

Second, know that you won't always get it right. Forgive yourself when you miss the mark so you can grow.

Third, pray. You are going to need it. Starting a business is not for the faint of heart.
