Insanely Delicious Donuts - Sandy's Donuts & Coffee Shop

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeff Ostlund, Owner of Sandy's Donuts & Coffee Shop, located in West Fargo, ND, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a retail and wholesale donut shop. Our customers range from one-year-olds to 90-year-olds :)

Tell us about yourself

I am the lucky third generation to take over my family's business. I worked in the business since I was a child but never planned on staying in it. After high school, I went off to the Marines for four years and then came back home to attend college. I had no clue what I wanted to do, but I ended up navigating to business and graduated with a Major in Business Management and a Minor in Entrepreneurship. After that, I knew I wanted to take over the family business. What motivates me most is knowing the positive impact we have in our community. Whether it is making a kid happy with a donut in one of our stores or the smiles we get when we deliver thousands of donuts to food shelters and non for profits throughout the year.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been getting through covid and navigating the post covid world while still being profitable. However, this was definitely not a "me" accomplishment. This was a team effort that took a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner for me is having a good work-life balance. Work issues do not go away when you get home, and home issues do not go away when you get to work. I am still learning how to leave the issues at the door and focus on what is in front of me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Business is tough, and to be honest, there are plenty of bad days. Dig deep and push through the tough times because, on the other end, there is a lot of joy and fun. Do not let a bad day, week, or even month get you down. Take care of your family and self before the business. If you are healthy and happy, then you will be much more successful at work.
