Purpose Built Podcast Studio - Scott Fitzgerald

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Fitzgerald, Co-Owner of ROC Vox Recording & Production, LLC, located in Pittsford, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We operate a Podcast, Voice Over and Live Stream studio and Production company with clients ranging from 4 guys doing a Fantasy Football Podcast to Multinational eLearning Design companies and a lot in between.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been interested in visual storytelling and technology. I went to school for radio broadcasting, ended up working in corporate video for many years, hosted a morning radio show, and also co-wrote and produced a feature film. I began this business on the side, and it became a full-time profession in 2020. I love coming to my own studio and spending my day creating and helping others tell their stories.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is when other places were closing their doors, we were expanding. I opened in 2018 and thought that a podcast studio would be a great addition to our community. Just one year later, podcasting really took off, and it's been growing ever since. I think we just had great timing to be the first in our area with a fully equipped podcast and live-stream studio.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is figuring out when you're done working for the day. I may come home for dinner at 5:30, but then I am on my phone answering emails or remoting into the studio to upload files or edit. Being able to just turn off and shut down for the day is a real challenge. It's especially tough because I truly love what I do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

To anyone looking to start, run and grow a business, I would say: be prepared to put in the hours. In any profession, you have to pay your dues, and when you run your own business, you pay them doubly. Also, be smart about your expenses. It is challenging to be on the leading edge of trends and technology but still manage to keep your costs down. We all have those "new toys" we need to buy, whether it is a new mixing board or a new mixer for the restaurant. Lastly, stay the course. You're going to have both good and bad days - some of them really bad. Don't let those days get the best of you. Focus on the good things you have, practice gratitude and never give up!
