Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ali Myers, Co-Owner of Seed & Sprout Nutrition, located in Fort McMurray, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Seed & Sprout Nutrition is owned by myself and fellow Registered Dietitian, Amanda Strang. We provide virtual nutrition counseling to women and their children, focusing on a plethora of areas (i.e., fertility, relationship with food, PCOS, picky eating, introduction to solids, and family meal planning).

Tell us about yourself

I first became interested in nutrition in my undergrad as I saw the impact it had on my sports performance as an NCAA Division I competitive swimmer. I thought my area of work would be mainly in sports nutrition after completing an MSc in Kinesiology with an emphasis in sports nutrition. However, after years of working in chronic disease management and then becoming a mother of 2, I quickly found out that there is a need for evidence-based nutrition guidance when it comes to feeding children, and parents are seeking that support.

After meeting my like-minded business partner, Amanda Strang, we knew our community could benefit from a dietitian private practice. All it took was one phone call and a good bit of work to launch our virtual practice. What keeps me motivated each day is to make this business a full-time, sustainable reality so I can be both a mother and a professional with flexibility.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The fact that Amanda and I followed through with our idea and actually started a business! Oftentimes we have so much self-doubt that we talk ourselves out of taking steps to make our ideas become a reality. If others can do it, so can you!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Keeping up with social media content!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stop talking about it and just do it! You are capable.
  2. Perfection is not the goal when you first launch, but rather, growth is.
  3. Find a method that holds you accountable to get the mundane tasks done.
