Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sergio P., a commercial photographer based in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My studio works with retailers and food brands to create bold and graphic visuals for commercial purposes.

Tell us about yourself

Staring at my future and knowing exactly what my trajectory looked like in a traditional employment route scared the $H!T out of me. My mom always had a camera with her, and growing up I obsessed over the creation of something that didn't exist before. I'm curious, I'm passionate, and I romanticize life, there is an innate need inside me to create, whether it's paid or not.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The luck I have to find a line of work that fulfils me and matches my personality is a feeling of accomplishment I wish onto everyone. Being a full-time creative with a dedicated studio space has been a dream of mine since I picked up a camera. Funny enough, now it mostly sits on a tripod.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You have to carve your own path. There's no ladder to climb, but you have all the materials to build one. It attracts the type of person who constantly wants to learn and adapt, anyone else doesn't stick around very long.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Running a business means being your own boss, and your own assistant, accountant, sales rep, HR department, etc. With anything that doesn't come easy, the reward is being able to say you did it.
