Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shane Talley-Thomas, a Professional Photographer based in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a Photographer and my customers are normal everyday people, models, and businesses with clothing/product.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Shane, but I go by Jack Kurtis. Artistically, I'm a father, a born and raised Washingtonian. I got my artistic start early with my grandma, great grandma, and all my uncles being artists or very artistic during my childhood. I picked up a Kodak camera very early, around age 5. My grandad got me a pocket camera at age 13, which I used to take MySpace photos with, and that turned into a want for a digital camera later. I started taking photos of models back in 2011 because the younger girls from MySpace days would ask and it just grew and grew. The motivation comes from the smiles my photos make at the end of the day, honestly lol.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

At this point in my art, I'm working with Playboy, and that's huge! I've also had a billboard for an editorial I did with a modeling agency in Timesquare, New York.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Nothing at this point in my career is hard besides dealing with the occasional client that's not on time. Other than that, it's all good 😊

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it!
  2. Don't wait!
  3. And redo it if you fail.
