Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shanique Allen, CEO of Shanique Allen Coaching, located in Everett, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a private nutrition coaching and nourishment strategy practice. I help women ditch the restrictive and toxic diet habits (undiet) and reclaim whole health nourishment through food, mindset change, and other health-promoting practices.

Tell us about yourself

I am a former personal trainer of 8 years and an athlete who had to unlearn and undiet when it became clear that the 'healthy' practices and perspectives I had were disordered and destructive and hadn't served me and my health (body and mind), as well as I, had believed, particularly as my life took new and challenging turns. I had to shift my focus to the whole health of the body and mind.

So for women going into or already finding themselves in a different/transitional phase of life, one where they realize their whole health matters more than restricting food and contorting themselves to fit an ideal size or look of health, I wanted to offer a different option for nourishing their whole health by embracing and honoring all of themselves (beyond aesthetics) at whatever phase or stage they're at.

I offer this through 1:1 coaching, group coaching, and nourishment workshops.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment by far is leaving my corporate job 10 years ago to start personal training and fitness consulting business, closing it down after 3 years, creating a second (online) business from scratch, and the growth I've experienced and am still experiencing from doing so. It has taught me more about myself than anything else I've ever experienced in my life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The loneliness that comes from working towards a vision that only you can see and one your closest friends or family might not see or support.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Treat every decision as an input to give you feedback. Whether it turns out well or not, it's still a lesson, and that will always be invaluable.
  2. Rest and often rest - it's your right.
  3. Celebrate every single win, no matter how small.
