Solving Inefficiencies - Shell Compliance

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shelly Forde, Founder of Shell Compliance, located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide strategic project management to implement new products or services or improve procedures from a financial crime perspective. I target small to mid-size businesses and help them be compliant with financial regulations. I have also helped companies become more efficient, more organized, and better able to optimize resources.

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved helping people and solving problems. It took me a while to figure out how, as most ideas were limiting my research of assisting others. I love what I do because I help people figure out problems without overly extending their resources. It's a source of pride when I can say that I revamped an entire department or implemented a successful plan for improving customer servicing. I also enjoy being able to meet new people and network with others; seeing their passion for their company makes me feel a part of their success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every successful client project is a big accomplishment, but I'm most proud of remaining authentic. I do what I can with what I know and stay committed to my personality, style, and approach.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In my field, I'm considered young. Starting my own consultancy company sounds premature to many people. Convincing my clients that I'm often more experienced and accomplished than my counterparts has been quite difficult. Also, the nervousness of others for stepping out on my own rather than sticking with the 9 to 5. Big rewards require big investments and big risks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It requires passion; you have to be personally motivated in whatever business you are starting.
  2. Be confident; you took the time to make the decision, and don't sway.
  3. Be practical; can you afford this leap? Can you afford not to? Do you have at least a minimum number of clients? Do you have the resources? Ask the right questions and make a plan. You can do this!!
