What's your business, and who are your customers?
I make unique hand-dipped pure beeswax candles for everyday chic and special occasions. As well, I offer soap-making workshops and DIY kits to learn to make nourishing, luxurious soap at home.
Tell us about yourself
I was at university for a long time, deep inside my head, and I needed to connect more with my sensual self. I always loved handmade soap and beeswax and felt it call to me as a passion that I could devote myself to.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say it was pivoting from focussing on soap sales to teaching people how to make their own soap. When I first started making soap over 20 years ago, handmade soap was a novelty. But as the market became more congested, it became harder to make sales. I always loved teaching, so moving to that was a natural progression for me. I was able to do it at a time when DIY was really hot. Then when the pandemic hit and in-person courses were not possible, I developed a DIY soap-making kit so people could learn to make soap at home.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being responsible for everything from creation to bookkeeping!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Start with your passion because that is the motivation that will create growth. Do your research - get to know your field so you can find your niche. And trust your instincts.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Although I love good sales reports, what really puts a smile on my face and keeps me going is reviews and feedback from customers. That social connection is priceless!
