Wearable Pieces of Art - Silver Sculptor

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanne Simmons, owner of Silver Sculptor, located in Jersey City, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I design and create beautiful handcrafted jewelry that empowers the wearer. I believe in equality for all, giving a voice to people that may not have one, and making them feel special and heard. I am passionate about making jewelry and giving my customers a voice through their accessories. I am committed to making meaningful jewelry that is well crafted and will last a lifetime, using ethically and sustainably sourced materials.

Tell us about yourself

I remember when I was younger, going to a craft fair and thinking how great it was that these people were selling what they were making. I have always been creative and will try out different crafts, and when I tried jewelry making, I fell in love! Being able to create something that you can wear that is an extension of your character and identity enabling my customers to express themselves through their jewelry means I can make pieces that are very personal for my customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2020, I was approached by the tv show The Young and The Restless to create a tie bar for them for a storyline. Since then, I've created a number of pieces for them and, most recently, an engagement ring for the first same-sex relationship on The Young and The Restless. It was such an exciting opportunity, and seeing my jewelry on TV is such a thrill!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I find that time management is the hardest, simply because as a solo entrepreneur, there are so many hats to wear and so many things to do. I find myself working in the evenings, but with that comes the flexibility to have a schedule that works for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start before you're ready; you'll learn on the job. It doesn't have to be perfect; your business will evolve organically.
  2. Find a community of like-minded people, the advice that you will get is invaluable.
  3. Make sure your customer service is on point. Customers will remember how you made them feel; they'll return and tell their friends about your business too.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
