Let The Truth Ring - SilverBell Coaching

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natasha Silver Bell, CEO of SilverBell Coaching located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SilverBell Coaching (SBC) in the business of recovery coaching and healing. It provides service to others through customized in-home treatment teams, called SBC LifeTeams, to better support the long-term maintenance of substance use disorder and mental health disorders. SBC LifeTeams provide continuity of care and overall life skills for those who have fallen from the path, whether from severe mental health, eating disorders, substance use disorders, or even elder care. Our approach is flexible and highly adaptive: from full integration to daily immersion to support with a light touch, we modify behaviors to help create sustainable life skills.

Tell us about yourself

I, myself, am in recovery from a substance use disorder and eating disorder. As a domestic violence survivor, I've overcome feelings of uselessness and self-pity. I choose to use my experiences in the service of others to create deeper continuity of care and to bridge the gap between in-patient treatment and real life. Mental health clinics, rehabs, detox facilities, treatment centers, in-patient and out-patient treatment – these traditional structures serve a great purpose but solve only one piece of the puzzle. To realize the whole beautiful picture, a new effort begins back at home amidst the triggers and challenges of daily life. SBC steps in when an individual exits treatment to strengthen and support their commitment in a discrete and private fashion. So many individuals return to treatment again and again.

SBC interrupts this well-documented revolving-door syndrome by helping people build a full, rich and satisfying life, benefitting not only the individual themselves but everyone invested in their health and well-being.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I could never have imagined that being a coach would lead me to create my own company. I am immensely proud of and grateful for the industry leader SBC has become today. By God's grace, I now manage over 150 coaches worldwide and work on cases from Dubai to Malaysia to London and New York City.

Managing teams and personalities is one of my strengths, and matching clients to the correct practitioners is what I do best. I love identifying how each coach's specific skills can be used to serve the client most efficiently. In addition, SBC is distinct in the support we provide to our client's families. I spend a great deal of time pausing to reflect on each family's needs and how my company can be of the greatest service in meeting them.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Trying to keep up with ever-increasing demand while growing SBC as mindfully as possible. Like anyone, I don't always get it right, but I continually try to embody the philosophy that mistakes are opportunities to grow. Instead of problems, I see situations rife with learning. I don't allow these moments to deter me from SBC's mission or my life purpose.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay focused on what drives you and your business instead of what makes others successful. Connect to the source of what motivated you to work in your business to begin with, and draw energy and inspiration from there.
  2. Allegiance to my vision, balanced with a deep respect for the experience of others, is the key to my success–and can be yours as well. Staying in your lane allows for true collaboration with others.
  3. What might be seen as a weakness can be your greatest strength if you stay open-minded and willing to challenge accepted norms. With my learning difference, I process information differently. My unique perspective has helped rather than hindered my growth and the growth of SBC.
