Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewellery but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Costin Lazar, co-owner of SILVERBRIDGE STUDIO, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a sculptor by training, I developed early on a side interest for art jewellery, both as a designer and a producer, and in time it became a lifelong passion, as well as a business.

I share all these with Gabriela, my wife, and partner in this enterprise.
Our customers come from a variety of backgrounds. They all share a love for substantial jewellery with interesting sensual shapes and high quality of execution.

Tell us about yourself

As a student of fine arts in the sculpting department, I started making jewellery pieces for both financial and aesthetic considerations. Once arrived in Canada, the prospect of making a living guided me rather quickly towards the field of jewellery making, as opposed to the lofty aspirations of fine art...In time and after amassing a wide range of technical knowledge, by getting my teeth cut through a few years in the industry, I decided to strike it on my own.

It was not success at "first sight," but perseverance and luck got me to where we are now. As far as motivation, I can only express the well-worn idiom that I do what I love, and I love what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I do not see our enterprise as a business but more like a continuous progression toward an ever-elusive perfection goal, a good reason not to consider an end in its pursuit...

But realistically speaking, it is a business, and since Gabriela is the financial and operative wizard of it all, I shall call this my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

From an artistic point of view, one of the hardest things about being a business owner is having people like what you do and not the other way around.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be prepared to fail, learn from mistakes, and love every bit of IT !!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Regardless of what kind of work your business is focused on, put all your heart into it, but don't forget to leave some for the ones who help or stand behind you.
