Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sam Lin, Co-Founder, and CEO of Skedspa, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Skedspa is a spa-focused metasearch engine that helps people discover the best spas and seamlessly book a reservation by comparing appointment times, reviews, amenities, photos, and pricing. Skedspa also enables spas to attract new customers by marketing to a broader audience with our distribution channel. Our customers are luxury spas, as well as people who want to prioritize self-care but don't have the time to search and schedule it themselves.

Tell us about yourself

I have over 10 years of experience booking these types of reservations, and it's always been a painful process because there is no single place to compare reservation times across multiple spas. In order to book a spa reservation now, if you don't know where to go or have limited availability, you must sift through dozens of websites, leave voicemails, or submit requests trying to uncover available times. It takes an average of 30 mins to book a reservation for a user, given the current solutions that exist. I have always had a passion for taking care of others, which has served me well as an Executive Assistant and especially as a parent. Now I'm on a mission to seamlessly empower people to take better care of themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping people take better care of themselves. Self-care is the gateway behavior that allows us to show up as the best versions of ourselves.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Owning our marketing and sales has been the hardest thing for me. When you found a startup, you must learn new skills and take on roles critical for the business, but that doesn't always come naturally.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on something you have a passion for.
  2. Find your niche.
  3. Follow a Build-Measure-Learn method and be prepared to pivot.
