Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shelby Wick, Founder of Slate Wearables, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My brand, Slate Wearables, designs timeless, neutral pieces constructed from 100% linen in Vancouver, Canada. We choose to be conscious of who we work with, the materials we purchase, and our impact on the environment. We are very aware of the negative impacts the fashion industry has on the planet and the global community, and we want to change the way people purchase.

Our customer is a conscious consumer with a wardrobe full of quality pieces that will last for many years to come. They love supporting ethically made, local brands that are trying to shift the fashion industry for the best.

Tell us about yourself

Slate was born as my final capstone project at Fashion School in Toronto. After extensive research on the fashion industry, I was really shocked by how unsustainable and unethical it can be. I became determined to create a brand that was conscious of these issues and would make a positive impact.

Upon returning to Vancouver after graduation, I wore a sample set to an event and was approached to show a collection in a charity fashion show. This ended up being an amazing experience and gave me the motivation to seriously start building my brand.

I've continued to focus on sustainability and ethics as core values in my brand and am always looking for ways to make a positive impact through my work. Giving customers a conscious yet stylish choice is one of my main motivations to continue what I do. I also love every second of running my brand - from designing the pieces to styling and directing the shoots; I love that I get to be the brand's visionary.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating pieces that are locally and ethically made that my customers love! In running a business, everyone wants to tell you what you should and shouldn't be doing. I'm proud that I've never compromised my values or let others' opinions affect my choices.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Constantly being out of your comfort zone. It's been an insane learning experience building a brand from the ground up with little to no experience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network with people and brands that are in the industry that you are looking to get into! I wish I had done this sooner, as once I did, I met some amazing people with amazing brands that were happy to point me in the right direction. This will save you time and money!
  2. Just start! It can be daunting making the decision to launch a business because there are so many foreign aspects that you will encounter. Small steps in the right direction will get you to where you want to be :)
  3. If I were to do it again, I would write down a list of all the skills and knowledge that I need to run a slow fashion brand. There are so many free resources online to help you learn what the heck to do! Dive into these and learn as much as you can before you start reaching out to suppliers and contractors and spending your money.
