Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mike Armour, Founder & Managing Principal of Strategic Leadership Development International, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Development of leaders and leadership teams across all industries and in organizations of every size.

Tell us about yourself

After spending a lifetime in demanding leadership positions, I wanted to devote the later phase of my life to sharing what I had learned with established and emerging leaders around the world. I began planning the launch of my firm in the 1990s and started operations in 2001.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've personally coached nearly 800 leaders, executives, and entrepreneurs and have trained thousands more on four continents. Clients have ranged from mom-and-pop startups to Fortune 100 giants.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Timely anticipation of changes in the marketplace, what potential clients will be seeking in light of these changes, and where they will be looking for services such as mine.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Overcapitalize. Unexpected costs always arise, and you must have the financial cushion to handle them.
  2. Quickly identify what you do best. Stick to that, and build people and organization around you to take care of everything else.
  3. From day one, build an organization that is agile, quick, and innovative.
