Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Ferrone, owner of Spire Physiotherapy, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a modern physiotherapy service established to bring a unique and multidisciplinary experience. We are looking to build a powerful connection with our community through education and treatment. Instead of treating symptoms after they have presented, we want to explore movement treatment options to prevent an injury from occurring in the first place. We want to equip our patients with the education and understanding of movement or injury to promote independence in symptom management.

Spire Physiotherapy is committed to offering high-quality, evidence-based assessment and treatment. Our goal is to provide a motivational and interactive experience which in turn, inspires healthier communities. Our patients are those interested in investing in their movement health before or after injuries occur. We offer physiotherapy for many different types of pain and injury but also have unique services such as pediatrics and pelvic health physiotherapy. Our goal is to be inclusive to all and provide care that reflects this. Our space is inclusive, and it is important for us to build a community, inviting voices in to bring the spirit, emotion, and human life into the picture. We look to our community to teach and challenge each other to learn more about the unique needs of our patients.

Instead of being in the culture, we want to create a new culture around proactive movement, preventative education, accessible wellness, and, most importantly - joy.

Tell us about yourself

Our primary goal at Spire Physiotherapy is to focus on the quality of each patient's care. We are local physiotherapists from the surrounding communities and are proudly female-owned and operated. As a personal note, I first expressed interest in pelvic health physiotherapy after the delivery of my first child. It was then I first handedly understood the impact pelvic floor dysfunction has on postpartum athletes returning to fitness. Regaining control of such an intimate but important aspect of fitness became my personal goal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a new business owner, my greatest accomplishment to date was making the jump to start this exciting venture during a very financially unstable time in the world. We opened during the COVID pandemic when masks, mandates, and restrictions were very much still present (and still are). We took a chance but knew in our hearts that no matter what the world wanted to throw at us, we would make it work within our business plan if our vision was strong enough.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Within the service delivery of physiotherapy, we are all hands on deck when we are interacting with our patients. There is rarely the opportunity to multitask and place our 'owners hat' on during our daily work obligations. This would make time management between direct patient care and between all other aspects of marketing, designing, accounting, training, interviewing, shopping, cleaning, etc. (and the list can likely go on forever!) the most difficult part of being a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The business plan is important. Getting all aspects of your vision on one page is extremely valuable (although completely time-consuming and tedious), especially if there is more than one shareholder. Make your mission and vision statement strong, so there is little to question when it comes to marketing your dream.
  2. Learn it all, then hire it out. It is hard to hire a supporting team member to onboard when you do not know the ins and outs yourself, endure the long days and growing pains first - then place the bandaids on and hire out the pain points to individuals that understand your vision and 'why.'
  3. Sleep and drink enough water. These are underrated aspects of health that I beg my clients to stick with me on!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We believe that less is more for our practice and our environment. We want our exercises to be accessible, providing plans that require minimal to no equipment, making it easy for clients to replicate at home. We are also on a journey to run a business that is better for the planet, opening with a minimal paper approach.
