Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marcia Reece, Founder, and CEO of StayWell Products, LLC., located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We manufacture antimicrobial copper that kills 99.9% of germs on contact. After nearly dying from an MRSA staph infection, I wanted to help all my family and friends never get sick from germs. We are proud to be Made in the USA.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Selling my company to the world's largest toy company. Hearing a child in Toys R Us say, "Mommy if you buy me this, it's all I will want all day." I walked over to see what she wanted, and it Was My Product. I was, and still am, thrilled. Sold products to Walmart when they had only 66 stores and then became a personal friend to Sam Walton. Trying to stay current in a social media world that is CONSTANTLY changing. I'm the dinosaur, but I want to continue to learn as much as I can.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Changing directions when things aren't working means leaving some folks and finding new ones.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. First and foremost, be attentive to all the details. Sometimes it may seem overwhelming to look at her To-Do List, but she attacks her list the same way she would eat an elephant...one bite at a time. Keep an ongoing list of tasks that will lead you to your end goal. Don't lose sight of all of the needs your new business will have. You don't have to be perfect to start, but you have to start to have a chance to end up successful.
  2. You may have heard; Your Health is Your Wealth. That's more true than you can possibly imagine as you navigate the entrepreneurial waters. You don't have a team of co-workers to fall back on, so it's all on your shoulders to keep your dream alive. Starting and running a business takes a lot of time. Plan to spend 50-70 hours a week getting your idea off the ground. It's easy to let healthy habits fall to the wayside.
  3. Your thank you reflects your thoughtfulness, your ability to think creatively, and your sincerity. Yes, they take time to write but get over it. I have always found writing a thank you note makes me feel better as well. There is a real, measurable benefit to feeling gratitude and blessed by someone who is helping you. Writing thank-you notes makes me smile inside and always perks up my day. I often get a phone call from the recipient, and that call just extends that mental health boost and makes me happy all over again.
