Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Stierhoff, Owner of Power & Balance Fitness and Nutrition, located in Reston, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Power & Balance Fitness and Nutrition has been my business for more than 10 years serving teenage through retired clients anywhere who want to feel and look better. Meaningful change for each client is accomplished through holistic lifestyle coaching and completely customized to each individual.

Tell us about yourself

Managing Lupus after the birth of my son prompted my health and fitness research more than 30 years ago. Managing Lupus means creating healthy lifestyle habits, so I can have the healthiest body possible. However, there have been many instances of health crises, with the last critical sepsis crisis almost 10 years ago that landed me nearly dead and ultimately wheelchair-bound. This was an epic event to live through, to say the least. But more than living through it, I exceeded my doctors' and physical therapist's expectations with amazing recovery and going completely off all medicines. After this, I knew that I must share what I know about living and thriving no matter what the obstacle. I share my years of personal experience with autoimmune, physical limitations, and illness through my fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have a couple of important accomplishments thus far in my business. Most important is seeing the results my clients get after they consistently follow healthy living as a lifelong lifestyle. Also, creating two performance foods that have been on the market for more than 10 years being purchased by customers since their beginning.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I am one mighty human. Because I am human and running a personalized coaching business as well as producing integrity-based performance foods, I have to keep a realistic approach to the scale I alone can manage absolutely effectively for my own health and those of my clients. The hardest part of doing this is to strike a healthy balance for these aspects of Power & Balance Fitness and Nutrition.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small and create a proof of concept of all the products and services with your clients and customers.
  2. Build and improve or master proven concepts and products through client/customer feedback.
  3. Roll out products and services using small markets or small regional markets where you can personally reach out and get to know your clients/customers to build a healthy base.
