Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephen Yeargan, a virtual event support technician based in Krum, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I offer technical support for webinars, virtual conferences, online meetings, and more. My customers include leadership and public speaking coaches, pharmaceutical companies, tech companies, and more that need support facilitating events.

Tell us about yourself

A long-time audio-visual technician, I had been working live events pre-lockdowns. After pivoting to virtual events and working remotely, I was able to remedy some issues with work-life balance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was pivoting to freelance work in a short amount of time, quickly surpassing my salary and improving my home life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I didn't realize I'd have to put almost as much effort into new leads as maintaining current customer relationships.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Say yes to everything that you think you can comfortably do. Sometimes related work can lead to the work you enjoy.
  2. Don't invest a ton of money into marketing materials. Instead, work the freelance platforms and build a referral network. Most of my clients happened organically. I only built a website and made business cards once my business was flourishing.
  3. Expect long hours at first, but once you have a good client base, you can then focus on creating the schedule and life you want.
