Daily Meditation Practice in Fort Collins - Stillness Center

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Byron Laws, Founder of Stillness Center, located in Fort Collins, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach Vedic meditation. Students are typically people who are looking to reduce stress and anxiety, become more self-aware and present, increase energy and vitality, have greater focus and clarity, and experience greater happiness and well-being.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a long-time meditator, going back nearly 20 years. As my meditation practice deepened, I found myself meditating for hours each day and night. But things are busy, and this practice has become quite difficult to manage based on the demands of daily life. I didn't have enough hours in the day.

As I worked on achieving a better balance between my inner and outer worlds, I came across a book called The Golden Sequence. In the book, Jonni Pollard, a teacher from the Vedic tradition, outlines a process by which we can develop the skills necessary to reclaim our humanity and become more "professional human beings."

I was compelled, so I completed the 1 Giant Mind teacher training program and was certified to teach meditation in early 2020. Stillness Center teaches a "Being" technique based on ancient Vedic practice. This technique is practiced for 20 minutes twice daily (morning and mid-afternoon). It creates mental space for us to become directly aware of the simplicity of our own existence in the present moment. I've found that teaching others to meditate deepens my own learning and practice greatly.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sharing the peace of mind and inner integration that begins to occur with regular meditation practice.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Focusing on improving and growing your product or service offering while simultaneously releasing a need for any particular outcome. I've found that if I pay close attention to the ongoing quality of my work, students show up when they're ready!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be intentional about what you want to accomplish. Visualize what it will look like when fully formed.
  2. Stick to your primary offering. Draw some boundaries that allow you to retain your focus.
  3. Ask for help when needed. Most of us have resources available to call on if we simply ask.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Stillness Center offers a 3-day Learn Meditation course. The Vedic technique taught is an easy and practical method of finding the Stillness within and is suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators.
