Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in a clothing line but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ali Conway, owner of Strange Bikinis, located in Reno, NV.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Strange Bikinis a female-owned and operated small batch swimwear label based out of Reno, NV. We make the best swimwear for women who live authentically and have a thirst for adventure. Catch our babes hiking to the most remote alpine lakes, finding the off-the-grid hot springs, and traveling all around our beautiful planet.

Tell us about yourself

I first started making swimwear when I live in LA and couldn't find anything that made me FEEL and look great. I was average build for a 24-year-old and saw the need to Create more flattering fits and quality products within the swimwear industry. I set out to create a brand that is about being yourself no matter what you look like and living your Strangest life (your best life) based on how you feel, which in a Strange Bikinis is your most confident self.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the community of women (and some men) I built up. We come together and started the body inclusivity movement. When I started Strange Bikinis, no one was using more natural-shaped women or curvy models. Everyone photoshopped cellulite and blemishes or stretch marks. Not me, I showed that off!  Now 10 years into it and the entire industry have shifted. Beyond that, locally where my shops are I have the mossiest supportive women working for me and as customers. We do good by each other and for the planet. I couldn't be prouder of myself for the community of Strangers! Thank you to anyone who is a part of it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is too hard to just pick one hard thing. I am faced with many hard things on a daily, but employee management and being a great leader are up there for me. It's constantly changing and I never set out to lead as a boss, so I have to put the work into myself to lead my team. I'm sure any business owner agrees with me that employees are the hardest part. (May I add that I have been very blessed with incredible employees since I started and I'm proud of every one of them as most move on to bigger positions)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don't wait, just do it. Understand money and how to organize it (accounting) and how it flows for your seasons (cash flow) It never gets easier, the more you grow different your problems or challenges become, but if it's your passion it will always be worth it.

Anything else you'd like to share?

As cliché as it sounds, always trust your gut. Take chances, have faith in yourself, and stay passionate.
