Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alyssa Dineen, Founder of Style My Profile, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Style My Profile is a full-service online dating profile styling and date coaching service. Most of our clients are single or divorced men and women aged 40-65 — people who aren't necessarily savvy at selfies and the modern world of online dating and who could use someone to guide them through the process.

Tell us about yourself

I started Style My Profile because I was a divorced person who struggled with online dating, and eventually, after much practice and a lot of trial and error met my long-term partner of 6 years. After we met, we both talked about how challenging it was to learn how to online date, both because we were coming out of long partnerships and because we are from a generation that didn't grow up with technology. We realized there were so many people just like us. I love helping people feel more confident and less fearful about getting out there in the modern dating world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My most tangible accomplishment is having helped hundreds of clients. But I hope countless more have been helped by "The Art of Online Dating," the book I wrote about my personal experience (+ dozens of client anecdotes) as a step-by-step guide to putting together an outstanding profile and having a great attitude about dating.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a creative person, my biggest challenge has been how to market and run a small business on my own.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear on who your ideal client is.
  2. Be prepared for a lot of trial and error.
  3. Set boundaries for yourself - you could literally be working all the time, but you have to create a healthy work/life balance to keep yourself motivated.
