The future of shopping for skincare - Subject[ive] Skin

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Astha Kanth, co-founder of Subjective Skin, located in Paris, France.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Subjective Skin is a conscious marketplace for conscious consumers. One that is educational in every way. Educating about skincare ingredients, about the skin in general, about the environment! Basically, an all-encompassing ethical and impact-driven skincare company. We want to do it all differently, stand out from the conventional. That's why we have chosen to be unbranded. Our marketing is different, our imaging is unique, and that's what we want to convey to the consumers. A skincare brand that's breaking all the norms of the beauty industry, whether that's flashy marketing or the product itself. Being a mission-driven and impact-driven skincare platform. We do not want to be another skincare brand that claims we do a lot, but we actually don't. We want to be transparent. Super transparent.

Tell us about yourself

We realized that marketing was at the forefront of the industry when really it should be science. We were also uncomfortable with the insane markups of products, the competitiveness and sought out to change that. In addition, there's a lot of young people who are shifting towards buying what works for their skin and not what's on the label. Subjective Skin makes it easier for them to find what's good for them and introduces them to new and upcoming brands that also want to make a difference. We do what we do because we think we can change bring a shift in the industry in terms of how people perceive and purchase skincare.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching our online store! Our concept is very unique, and to get everything right was a task, but we finally were able to pull it off, and we're extremely proud of it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For us, it was to get people to grasp the concept of who and what we are as a brand. We have spent so much time on it, so for us, it makes total sense that it is an unbranded and individualized skincare store.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear objective with your project.
  2. Be extremely unique, even if at times you feel no one will catch on, just go for it!
  3. Be ready for a rollercoaster ride: agility, determination, and persistence are key.
