Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sue Firth, Director of Sue Firth Ltd., located in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Business Psychologist and Performance Coach. My customers are executives, senior managers, and often, their family members.

Tell us about yourself

I first decided I wanted to be a Psychologist at the age of 14! Something struck me that I could make the greatest difference to people by learning how to support them. I didn't know what that would become then, but now that I coach, speak professionally, and write books, it's become a living I am proud of. Each topic I discuss, whether on the platform or my podcast, is designed to enhance the skills needed to improve our quality of life, mostly for my target market but with other people in mind as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Consistency of delivery, I think. We are topical, supportive, and approachable, and we care as a business. My greatest achievement has been to 'be myself,' and in doing so I can be direct, but importantly, I do it because it's better to tell someone what they need to hear, not always what they'd like to hear. I'm the same on the platform.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Looking after a team. They need support, coaching, and direction, and I don't always have the time. Playing to my strengths means I rely on them. I also want to grow and expand what I do, but at times this means a team member meets their limits of experience, and that's a struggle. To recognise that you need a new member who can do things differently is to take a risk, but sometimes in a small business, that's important. Then you reach the next level, and so on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be guided by what you are passionate about and what your target market actually needs. That way, you keep delivering something that is likely to sell.
  2. Building a team doesn't have to be full-time employees. Working virtually is the place to start. And that way, they learn about you and how you work, and you learn to find the fees/costs involved.
  3. Be scared but keep going. Determination, consistency, and constant learning as you go is the only way to make things happen in my experience.
