Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jody Edgar, CEO of Sunbowl Systems Inc., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help entrepreneurs start and scale their businesses. With my online course, Expert by Monday, I will take you from someone who has never used Shopify to an expert by Monday. I use real-world examples that are easily relatable and actionable while you watch the course. If you get stuck, we have a DIY community to help you along. If that isn’t your flavour we have a full agency that will do the work for you. Stop looking and start earning at whatever pace you like.

Tell us about yourself

I opened my first business at eight years old. I was selling golf balls on a local golf course. My family has always been entrepreneurial, so starting a business was just the way we did it. Each day I get up with the energy to solve problems or help one person. There is no better feeling than solving someone’s problem. 1% better each day is all I strive for. Success is not about doing extraordinary things once. It’s about doing the same things for an extraordinary period of time. Every person I help start their business is another step forward.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, it’s my staff. When they tell me that working for me has been the best experience of their lives, seeing that you can run a business without running over people is all the motivation I need. My accomplishments are in awards or in money in the bank. It’s in lives made better through kindness and compassion.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The emotional roller coaster you go through every day. You can go from being on top of the world to being under it in a few minutes. The hardest thing is getting used to the swings. It gets better, or rather you get better at managing it; however, in the beginning, it’s intense. The truth of it is, no matter what happens, It’s only over when you quit. If you don’t quit, there is always tomorrow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t do it, and if you don’t listen to me, you might stand a chance.
  2. Focus on the people, especially when it’s not going well. The people you work with are what is important. Treat them well, and they will see you through.
  3. Do, Fail, Repeat. Starting a business is hard. It takes a long time, and you will make mistakes often, many of them more than once, but as long as you keep trying, you will succeed eventually. Starting a business is not for everyone, but if you are smart, brave, passionate, and a little crazy, a regular job won’t bring you fulfillment.
