What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have a coaching business, and I support mid-career professionals through career transitions. Essentially I work with those in the middle of their career who realise that they want to be doing something different and actually want to act on that and make a change. I guide them to clarity around what makes sense as their ideal move, then work on ensuring their mindset is correct to transition. We then work on the marketing elements such as their CV, interview coaching, and their outreach approach.
Tell us about yourself
It took me many years to realise what I wanted to do with my career. As for my specific coaching niche, this was something I did for a while in the background. It was essentially a passion project that I did for friends and family. Then one day, I looked back on my own career history and realised how many years I agonised trying to transition into my dream career and do my best work. I realised that I could reverse-engineer the process, study for coaching certification, and then turn it into a business. I get people where I managed to get myself, only quicker!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building something that gives me flexibility and freedom whilst also adding more value to others than the sums I charge as a fee. There's nothing better than that.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It gets very lonely. It makes a lot of sense to find as many people as possible who are in the same boat and then spend as much time as possible talking to them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
A great idea doesn't guarantee a successful business. Also, the idea behind the business doesn't need to be something that nobody has done before. Most successful entrepreneurs (statistically speaking) are simply putting their own stamp on something that already existed. Even saturation isn't always something to fear, and it's proof of concept!
