What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Sunshine Consulting, we focus on fun and interactive team-building experiences done virtually and in person. The experiences are cocktail and mocktail based and include a fun arc of history, science, and at-home cocktail-making techniques. Our main customers are groups of people, generally between 25 and 50 years old, who are on the same work team or part of a civic group.

Tell us about yourself

I have spent 30 years in the restaurant business and decided to do Sunshine Consulting full-time about three years ago. Teaching skills and seeing people have a good time are what motivate me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I had a sort of out-of-body experience when I was looking at my client list folder, and it read: Apple, Meta, Salesforce, Great Clips, Lindt, Crowdstrike, and the Oxford Society (among others). I thought to myself, "Wow, you might just make it."

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Slow months. Trusting that what you are doing is good and people like it. I still haven't totally gotten over the self-doubt during slow times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Start doing it and stop making excuses. The time to start is today, and you'll always come up with an excuse about how "next week" will be better.
Your customers are not everyone. Be open-minded and find your customer base.
Be ready for an onslaught of advice and salespeople, and have someone you can bounce ideas off who doesn't want money from you.
