What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the midlife coach with an upbeat, fun approach to help you love your life again after 50! It turns out that tons of midlife women don't know how amazing they are. That's where I come in. If you feel like you're wasting valuable time spinning in confusion about what you really want in your next chapter, I'm here for you. I help you get unstuck and live your best life after 50 because there's way more fun to be had!

Tell us about yourself

For the longest time, I wasn't stuck at all. I was a happy camper at work. My career was based on something I was always fascinated by, why we humans do what we do. I even wrote about this in the little blurb next to my graduation photo in my high school yearbook. So, it's really no surprise that my passion led me to study behavior. My MA in Applied Social Psychology honed my listening skills and opened the door to a 27-year career in public health and health education.

But in my late 40s, something changed. I was bored and no longer content. Although I loved my career, I found myself feeling quite stuck about the time I turned 50. I really craved working one-on-one with people, and that wasn't something my career offered me. I wanted more. I felt it deep inside. And…I was afraid of having regrets. I didn't want to have regrets about what I didn't do, didn't say, didn't try, or didn't change. BUT…I was so fearful of change. Especially my job.

Does your job look great on paper, but it's boring you to tears too, like mine was? I don't know about you, but I was withering away, just passing the time. Oddly enough, I couldn't get my head around leaving. Golden handcuffs can get really tight! I was afraid to leave. And I let five years go by. Then one day…I got a fateful knock at my office door. I was being laid off. Totally harsh, but wow, it opened up the possibility for me to make the change I really wanted but was too fearful of making on my own.

This is why I get what you're going through. I was there too. I know first-hand what it's like to feel confused and fearful about change. I also know what it's like to bust through. I hired a life coach and saw how, with coaching and guidance, I could "grow forward" the way I wanted to. I finally figured out what I wanted and how to get there. In 2014, I trained to be a Certified Master Life Coach and never looked back. Becoming an entrepreneur was something I didn't realize how much I always wanted. Yes, I was still scared, but I learned how to do it anyway. Coaching was so transformative and changed my life.

This is exactly why I do what I do today. I believe aging is a gift. My parents died way too young and didn't get the privilege to age. It drives me crazy to watch amazing midlife women close doors of possibility and opportunity before they even open them. This is what motivates me...knowing that I have the skills to help "women in the middle" love their lives again and connect with what they want and who they want to be in their next chapter. In a nutshell, I help midlife women finally feel free. It's that simple, that complex, and that exhilarating!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was to figure out how to connect with and help women over 50. I'm the host of the popular Women in the Middle® Podcast, which now has over 1 million downloads! Producing this podcast has turned out to be an amazing way to develop relationships with women looking to make important changes in midlife. I'm constantly challenging myself to create exceptionally relevant content for my listeners to support the pivots, changes, and transformations they know they're ready to make. It's taken consistency, creativity, and some grit to actually publish a weekly podcast like this, but the reward is developing a meaningful connection with the women I'm crazy about helping!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is accepting that the best way forward needs to be led by you trusting yourself more. It's impossible to have the certainty you would love to have about every step you need to take. Adjusting your mindset to be accepting of mistakes and failure can be challenging but so important.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you're having as much fun as you are working hard. It's super easy to forget about the importance of loving what you're doing, which is likely why you got into it in the first place.
  2. Learn to trust yourself. There's not only one right or the best way to proceed.
  3. Keep "compare and despair" at bay. You will be surprised how your negative emotions can get in your way; comparing yourself to others and feeling bad about your progress or success just isn't helpful and what you focus on tends to grow. It's a much better idea to focus on how to create the emotions you need to create the success that you want.
