Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in outdoor apparel but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Gellis, Founder of Swimlids, located in Saco, ME, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Swimlids. Our target market is moms and women ages 40+ who care about skincare protection.

Tell us about yourself

I thought of the idea during a family vacation. My eldest daughter had a sun rash, and the hats we had got really wet and uncomfortable. After doing my swim laps, I placed my silicone swim cap over a baseball hat. She was able to swim all day and have sun protection. The company has grown since. My family motivates me to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2020 I was nominated by the SBA as Maine's Woman-Owned Small Business of the year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It can be a rollercoaster of emotions. Some days all is great, and the next, you are dealing with a problem that feels unsolvable, but at the end of the day, it's worth it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know how to be a salesperson.
  2. Have extra capital for tough times.
  3. Ask for help and surround yourself with positive people.
