Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kati Lohr, Co-Founder of Synchronous Health Inc., located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a privately owned mental health and well-being Social Benefits Corporation. Our mission statement is "Achieving the best of what it means to be human, thus creating a kinder world," and our Population Health services are advancing "whole-person" tele-health delivery by increasing accessibility to quality mental health care. Our national network of licensed and credentialled "Triple Crowned" Specialists use our proprietary AI Bot named Karla© to deliver interventions in-between sessions, making care more effective and efficient than traditional delivery methods. Our customers are large employers, health systems, payors, and University systems. Our evidence-based outcomes show significant improvements in participants' quality of life through increasing resilience and decreasing symptomology of depression, anxiety, and substance misuse.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor for 25 years, and my partners and I wanted to find a way to help those we serve to get better faster and stay better longer. We knew technology could be an asset in supporting care delivery, so we built our platform to support providers in collaborating with empathy and efficiency. I love being able to build teams of talented creative providers and design innovative clinical programs to support best-in-class mental health care delivery.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My co-founders and I have built a company where the mission and vision continue to be the driving force for associates who join our teams. We attract a diverse community that creates meaningful connections across dispersed remote teams around the country. We have grown from 20-80 associates in 18 months and expect to double in the next year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Supporting people in finding the balance between wanting to serve our communities and take care of themselves and their families.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be intentional and deliberate in building your Brand and your Mission and Vision.
  2. Partner with people you enjoy spending time with and with whom you can have healthy conflict.
  3. Learn to take healthy risks and be willing to be wrong.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Seek out different perspectives and actively listen to others more than sharing your own.
