SZScrochet - Sophia Jiang

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in handcrafts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sophia Jiang, Co-Founder of SZScrochet, located in Markham, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a mother-daughter trio making handmade crochet and knitting crafts. Our customers are anyone and everyone who loves handmade art as much as we do.

Tell us about yourself

The idea of creating SZScrochet comes from my mom's love for knitting and crocheting. Ever since my brother and I were babies, my mom would make us crochet animals, blankets, baby clothes, and more. She is a stay-at-home mom who has always given so much love and care to my brother and me, while crocheting was her passion. Now that we've gotten older and have welcomed my dear sister-in-law, Zihan, into the family, we want to give back to our mother and allow her to focus on her passion for crocheting. That's why we started SZScrochet! 'SZS' stands for our names, Shu Hong (my mother), Zihan (my sister-in-law), and Sophia (that's me!).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be our TikTok videos reaching over 70,000 views and the love we receive on our social media pages.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is to keep up with marketing and the fast-going trends on social media. Not only is it important to find a trend that matches your brand image but to produce good-quality videos that would grab audiences' attention.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Consider why you want to start a business. Is it to make a difference in the community? Is it to provide unavailable goods or services in the current market?
  2. Research the current market, product costs, and competition.
  3. Try to be consistent. The business will have ups and downs, and your motivation towards the business will also build habits that help you be consistent when motivation is low, and business is slow.
