Making Lifestyle Changes From the Inside Out! - Tammy Wright

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tammy Wright, Co-Owner of ABC Fitness Connection, located in Waldorf, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ABC Fitness Connection, LLC is a premier fitness boutique started in 2004 and located in Waldorf, Maryland. The services are targeted to helping clients to achieve their fitness, weight loss, and well-being goals. With a market target for all ages, ABC Fitness Connection prides itself as a company offering training solutions catered to those keen to connecting to the achievement of their fitness. ABC Fitness Connection offers personal training, Zumba, group exercise classes, and nutritional guidance. Also, we educate about the dangers of e-cigs, vaping, and tobacco use. Overall, ABC Fitness Connection is in this fight to help our community to combat preventable chronic diseases and illnesses, especially those connected with obesity. Our customers/clients are mainly women ages 35 - 60.

Tell us about yourself

We both love fitness and wellness; we met in the gym. Our business is over 18 years old, and it started as a STEP UP to a setback when John, my husband, was fired from his job. He endured many hardships from his manager that triggered different feelings (PTSD) from his three (3) combat tours. ABC Fitness Connection started as a mobile service that provided services in the comfort of our client's homes, and about a couple of years later, we moved into our brick-and-mortar location. Overall, ABC Fitness Connection is a fitness studio that has a goal to empower wellness and a healthy lifestyle. We love giving back to our community!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

ABC Fitness Connection gives us the opportunity to share the importance of well-being after witnessing the health disparities between African American and Caucasians. For example, African Americans have higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease than other groups, and African American children have a 500% higher death rate from asthma.

Our goal is to help our community combat preventable chronic diseases and illnesses, especially those connected with obesity. It is through our passion that we provide tools for a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition, and daily exercise to create a sense of well-being that enhances performance in one's job, as well as every aspect of life. ABC Fitness Connection offers personal training, Zumba, group exercise classes, and nutritional guidance. We do presentations to educate about the dangers of vaping, e-cigs, and tobacco use to youth ages 12-18.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The largest thing that comes with being a business owner is trusting your business model. When we first opened, we wanted to be like the large big boxed gyms by offering memberships and decreased our pricing. This model did not support our mission statement or our business model. Know your why and throw the imposter syndrome out the window!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand the needs of your customers and listen to their 'changing' needs.
  2. Understand your prices, cash flow, and expenses.
  3. Understand the power of networking.
